Overview
Installation of a New Complete Fire System (Detection and PAVA) at a Train Station.
We installed a state-of-the-art fire alarm system at a train station to comply with local safety regulations and ensure the security of its occupants.
Our team of designers completed the detection and PAVA designs in adherence to the following standards:
BS5839-1 and BS5839-8
LPCB LPS1014
This comprehensive approach guaranteed compliance with the highest safety standards, ensuring the utmost protection for the station.
Challenges Faced
Complex Building Layout:
The building featured a mix of open-plan spaces and enclosed rooms, necessitating a tailored approach to fire detection coverage. Ensuring complete coverage while avoiding false alarms posed a significant challenge.
Short Turnaround for Completion:
There was a tight deadline for the unit to open and start operations, requiring efficient project management.
Integration with Other Systems:
The fire alarm system needed seamless integration with the station-wide fire system and access to control systems. Coordinating with contractors and ensuring interoperability demanded extensive planning and testing.
Operational Disruptions:
Working in a live railway station with high public traffic made minimising disruptions crucial. Work had to be scheduled outside business hours and phased strategically to avoid impacting daily operations.
Collaboration with Stakeholders
Regular coordination meetings with management, contractors, and regulatory bodies (NWR Fire team) streamlined approvals and integration efforts.
Proactive Procurement Strategies
By sourcing from multiple vendors and pre-ordering critical components, we effectively mitigated the impact of supply chain delays. The fire alarm system was successfully installed and commissioned on time, meeting all safety standards.
Its integration with other services was seamless, enhancing overall emergency response capabilities. Our proactive problem-solving approach ensured minimal disruptions, and the project was completed within budget.
Conclusion
This project underscores the importance of flexibility, collaboration, and strategic planning in fire alarm system installations. Overcoming challenges such as regulatory compliance, operational constraints, and supply chain disruptions required innovative solutions and a client-focused approach. The project's success has led to further collaborations with M&S on future safety initiatives.
